George Melville Lord was born in Deptford, London, in September 1917 and enlisted in the Royal Engineers (Territorials) in April 1938, with an appointment in 84th (Queen’s Own Royal West Kent) A.A. Battalion.
Called up in September 1939, he transferred to the Royal Artillery in August 1940, and shortly thereafter took up appointment as a Fire Control Operator in Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships (D.E.M.S.), accompanying documentation revealing service aboard the S.S. City of Paris from late 1941 to August 1942, so, too, in 4th Regiment Maritime R.A. He was discharged at Southport in Dec 1945.
Sold with a quantity of original documentation, including the recipient’s Certified Copy of Attestation, dated 6 April 1938; his call up papers, dated 26 October 1938; a ‘crossing the line’ printed certificate, dated 22 October 1941; a letter of reference from the Master of the S.S. City of Paris, dated at Bombay, 7 August 1942; a D.E.M.S. cartoon Christmas card for 1944; his Release Leave Certificate, with confirmation of the above campaign awards and clasp, dated at Southport, 22 December 1945; Record of Service card, dated 31 December 1945; Certificate of Transfer to the Army Reserve, dated 30 March 1946; Army Council forwarding slip for his campaign awards, and a selection of portrait photographs in uniform (7).
