Six: Fusilier W. Wellman, Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, late Sherwood Foresters, who, having been taken P.O.W. in North-West Europe in 1944-45, was killed in action at Imjin River in April 1951

M.Wellman, 8, Lacey Close, Thorpe Lea, Egham’ Surrey’, together with Army Council condolence slip in the name of ‘1429896 Fus. W. Wellman, R.N.F.’, extremely fine (6) £1800-2200

William Charles Wellman, late of the Sherwood Foresters, who was taken P.O.W. in North-West Europe in the last war, and incarcerated in Stalag 344, near Lamsdorf, was among those recalled from the Army Reserve on the outbreak of hostilities in Korea. Assigned to the 1st Battalion, Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on the last day of the battle of Imjin River on 25 April 1951. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated at the U.N’s Memorial Cemetery, Pusan.
