Charles Symes was born in Cardiff. A Coach Builder by occupation, he attested for the 5th Dragoon Guards at London on 31 October 1892, aged 19 years, 2 months. With the regiment he served in India, March 1894-October 1899 and South Africa, October 1899-August 1902. Posted to the 7th Dragoon Guards in March 1902. Transferred to the Army Reserve in March 1903 and discharged in October 1904. With copied service papers and roll extracts.
