William Gadsden was born in Easton Bray, near Bedford. A Groom by occupation, he attested for short service in the Corps of Hussars of the Line in February 1900, aged 18 years, 7 months. Posted to the 10th Hussars, he served in South Africa, February 1901-September 1902 and in India, September 1902-February 1908. Transferred to the Army Reserve in February 1908, he was discharged on 4 February 1912 having completed his period of service.
