Walter Harris was born in Dundalk, Co. Louth on 20 January 1866. He joined the L.C.C.M.F.B. in June 1894 and rated as a Fireman 4th Class was posted to the Manchester Square Fire Station. He was transferred to Hampstead in May 1896, Kensington in October 1896, Brigade H.Q. in November 1896, and St. John’s Wood in December 1896. He attained the rank of Fireman 3rd Class in November 1896.
His service record does not make particularly good reading - being found to be under the influence of drink on 18 September 1894 and again on 16 November 1896; disregarding medical officer’s instructions and using abusive language to a superior officer on 17 November 1896 and fighting with another fireman on 8 November 1897. Unsurprisingly he was allowed to resign on 10 November 1897.
