Walter Wilkins born in Smallbridge, near Axminster, Somerset. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Royal Artillery at Woolwich on 10 February 1892, aged 18 years. He served in South Africa, September 1899-January 1901, being attached to the 86th Battery R.F.A. from June 1900. Invalided to England, he was discharged as medically unfit at Newport, Monmouthshire on 25 January 1902. With copied service papers and roll extracts. He is the only man of the 86th Battery to be awarded the ‘Defence of Ladysmith’ clasp. The medal would appear to have been inscribed to the ‘R.G.A.’ in error.
