Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
A letter written by his brother Herbert to their father reads, ‘My dear Father, It is with the greatest of regret I have to tell you that Alf was killed in action on the 18th instant. After the Batt. had gained their objective .... He was hit by a shell and died immediately. I have obtained his watch and pocket book together with the most of his private stuff, and shall send them home. The Colonel spoke to me yesterday and said how sorry he was to hear of Alf’s death and remarked that he was yet “another good man I have lost”..... I spoke to Alf an hour before he went into action.’
