Charles Henry Hoare was born in Portsmouth on 22 July 1870. A Labourer by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in October 1888. Advanced to Stoker in July 1889, Leading Stoker in May 1899; Acting Chief Stoker in October 1900 and Chief Stoker in October 1901. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. in November 1903. Shore Pensioned on 15 November 1910, he joined the Portsmouth R.F.R. the following day. Recalled to the service on the outbreak of war, he served on the battlecruiser H.M.S. Invincible at the battle of the Falkland Islands, 8 December 1914. On the same ship, flagship of the 3rd Battlecruiser Squadron, he was killed in action at the battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916. The ship was blown in half and of her complement of 1026 officers and ratings, only six survived. His name is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval memorial. With copied research.
