An explanatory note attached to the reverse of the picture states:

‘A Spitfire Mk. 1A closes on a Messerschmitt Bf. 109E-7 of 3/LG2 during one of the big daylight raids on London of 15th September 1940 - the climax of the Battle of Britain. The similar aircraft of Unteroffizier Klick (Red 2, Werk No. 2058) is in its death throes in this picture, a victim of the intense fighter cover that the R.A.F. put up to combat there massive raids.’
