Thomas Smith was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire. A File Cutter by occupation, he attested for the 24th Regiment at Sheffield on 27 October 1858, aged 17 years, 6 months. With the regiment he served in Mauritius, May 1860-October 1865; East Indies, October 1865-July 1868 and December 1869-January 1873; South Africa, 1 March-2 October 1879. Private Thomas Smith was discharged from the Army on 19 July 1881 having completed the second period of his limited engagement. With copied service papers and other research.
