Medal of the Order of the British Empire, (Civil), named on edge (W. J. Gorman) good very fine £160-200
O.B.E. Medal, London Gazette, 7th July, 1920: William James Gorman, Fireman, West Ham Fire Brigade. ‘For conspicuous courage and devotion to duty at fires at munitions factories.’
Fireman Gorman had previously been awarded the West Ham Council's Medal for Bravery and the Medal of the Society for Protection of Life from Fire, for conspicuous bravery in rescuing a women from a burning house on 10th January, 1919.
The above medal was sold in B.D.W. 6 May 1992, lot 400. A group of full-size medals awarded to Gorman and consisting of the O.B.E., George Medal, Medal of the Order of the British Empire and Queen’s Fire Service Medal and others, was sold in D.N.W. 16 September 2010, lot 1558.
