A Second World War O.B.E. group of eight awarded to Brigadier E. Temple, Royal Field Artillery

Edward Temple was born on 26 April 1892, son of Col John Temple. Educated at Clifton College, 1903-1910 and RMA Woolwich. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery on 19 July 1912, he was advanced to Lieutenant, June 1915; Captain, August 1916; Acting Major, January-August 1917; January-December 1918, and March-September 1919; Major, March 1931; Lieutenant-Colonel, January 1939; Acting Colonel, May-November 1940; Temporary Colonel, November 1940-December 1942; Colonel, December 1942; (w.e.f. 1 Jan 1942); Acting Brigadier, July 1943-January 1943; Temporary Brigadier, January 1944-March 1945; and retired as an Honorary Brigadier on 4 July 1946.

During the Great War Temple served on the North-West Frontier, being engaged in fighting against the Mohmands and Swatis in the vicinity of Hafiz Kor and Shabkadar from August to 1 October 1915. He then served in Mesopotamia from December 1916 to 31 October 1918, including in command of R.F.A. batteries. Between the wars Temple filled a variety of posts in the U.K. and India, and passed Staff College in India. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Temple was in command of 4th Heavy Regiment R.A. on Malta. During the war he served mostly on Staff, being A.A. & Q.M.G. in Iceland from 4 June to 18 December 1940. Awarded the O.B.E. in the New Years Honours List of 1941. Commander, 1st A.A. Training Group from 28 April to 24 September 1941, and Brigadier in charge of administration, G.H.Q., West Africa Command, from July 1943 to January 1945. Brigadier Temple died on 7 January 1961.
