39th (Worcestershire) Rifle Volunteers /Ancient Order of Foresters Presentation Sword, 1822 Rifles Pattern the 83 cm single fullered blade etched with ‘Worcestershire Rifles’ and scrolling foliage and on the reverse presentation inscription ‘A.O.F. Court Battle Oak. 2554 Presented to W. H. Hayward Esqr., P.C.R. by the Members as a token of respect for his zeal in promoting the welfare of the Court Oldbury Feby. 1866’, the triple bar pierced hand guard incorporates crowned coiled bugle horn with ‘39’ within the coil (the county precedence number), wire bound fish skin grip contained in its plated metal scabbard, the blade in very good condition, the scabbard with pitting and surface rust £200-300
William Henry Hayward MRCS LSA educated Queen's College, Birmingham, Medallist in Medicine & Surgery, placed on the Medical Register 1859, appointed Assistant Surgeon 16th Oldbury Rifle Volunteers 19 December 1865, resigned the appointment in 1876, he died at Manchester in 1902.
