Provenance: W.H. Pheatt Collection, Part II, BDW Auction 15, 6 September 1995, lot 348 (part) [from R. Margolis August 1969]; bt M. Trenerry December 1995.

Described in the Pheatt catalogue as 1578/7, the present cataloguer doubts that all the flat-topped 8s seen on the coins of 1568 and 1578 are the result of being struck over a 7, although it may be that this is how this odd style first occurred. By 1580, the normal round-topped figure is resumed, even on the 1580/79 overdates
