Arthur Reignallt Mytton was born on 21 August 1878, the son of Devereux Herbert Mytton and Emma Lydia Mytton, nee Story; a younger brother of George Herbert Mytton, of Garth and Penylan. A. R. Mytton was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th Battalion Royal Fusiliers (London Gazette 17 April 1900) and later was appointed a Lieutenant (London Gazette 28 August 1900). Appointed a Lieutenant in the 89th (Montgomeryshire) Company Imperial Yeomanry in March 1901, he sailed for South Africa aboard the S.S. Norman in April 1901, his brother Captain G. H. Mytton sailing on the same ship as commander of the 88th (Welsh Yeomanry) Company, 9th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. In September 1901 the 88th and 89th Companies Imperial Yeomanry, with the Bechuanaland Rifles and 4th Bedfordshire Mounted Infantry and others, were formed into a provisional regiment styled the 1st Divisional Scouting Corps. Captain G. H. Mytton was appointed Adjutant of the Corps and the command of the 88th Company was handed over to Lieutenant A. R. Mytton. Both brothers were presented with their Queen’s South Africa Medals by General Viscount Kitchener at a parade at Powis Castle Park, on 6 September 1902. A. R. Mytton was promoted to Captain in the 5th Battalion Royal Fusiliers in June 1904 and was seconded for services under the Colonial Office, becoming a District Commissioner in North Nigeria in July 1903. At the beginning of the Great War, Mytton was ranked as an Honorary Major with the East African Political Department and entered the Cameroon theatre of war on 29 May 1915. Later listed as a Temporary Lieutenant and Temporary Captain in the Nigeria Regiment and Special List. He was mentioned in despatches for the campaign in Northern Cameroons as a Temporary Lieutenant in the Nigeria Political Service (London Gazette 31 May 1916). Awarded the 1914-15 Star trio of medals.
