Rhodesia, Bulawayo, 1897, a uniface oval silver-gilt medal, arms and supporters, 4th NOVr 1897 below, 31 x 25mm (cf. DNW 34, 517). Very fine; with clip and ring for suspension (£40-60)

Stokesay Court Sale, Sotheby Auction, 30 September 1994, lot 1268 (part).

Sold with an old envelope inscribed ‘Medal (gold?) brought from S. Africa by my brother Albert Russell 1900.’

Bulawayo was founded by a group of British settlers led by Cecil Rhodes in 1893, but was a hostile environment until the British South Africa Company settled peace with local tribespeople in 1897 and it became a prosperous railway town
