B & M 41, 40 and 45 very fine, B & M 44 weak in parts but fine and extremely rare, the best of only two specimen in private hands, others only fair but both very rare; an exceptional group of this issuer, only lacking one recently-discovered and as yet unpublished variety (£250-300)

John Hartley (1605-1679), mercer and draper; married Elizabeth Grove in January 1626. The Hartley family was widespread in the town. The styles of B & M 41 and 42 would suggest an earlier issue than B & M 40
