James Gomme, FSA (†July 1825), cabinet and furniture-maker. Known to a contemporary as ‘a portly man of dignified appearance,’ he was a personal friend of Louis XVIII of France, whom he met when Louis was exiled at Hartwell House, Aylesbury, during the Napoleonic war, and of the statesman Edmund Burke. Gomme collected works of art, which were sold by auction after his death in the Town Hall shown on the token. Further details are sold with the lot
