Henry C. Shute was born in Portsea, Hampshire on 17 February 1835. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy on Retribution, in February 1853. Promoted to Ordinary Seaman 2nd Class in April 1854. Served on Bellerophon, April 1854-April 1855, being advanced to Able Seaman in December 1854. Served on Hawke, April 1855-May 1856. During the Second China War he served on Opossum, July 1856-January 1861, being advanced to Quartermaster in February 1860. Further service followed at that rating and as Seaman Gunner, serving on Excellent, Sutlej, Racoon and Lord Warden, until discharged ashore on 10 June 1871.
