Four: Staff Armourer-Sergeant T. Pinkney, 42nd Highlanders

Thomas Pinkney was born in Birr, Ireland and enlisted in the Corps of Armourers at Birmingham in March 1873, aged 21 years. Less than six months later he was appointed Armourer-Sergeant and, in November 1873, he transferred to the 42nd Highlanders. He remained similarly employed for the remainder of his 21 years with the Colours, seeing action in the Ashantee, Egypt and the Sudan. Advanced to Colour-Sergeant in August 1885 and to Staff Armourer-Sergeant in November 1889, he took his discharge in Mauritius in March 1894. He subsequently found employment as a viewer at the Small Arms Factory, Enfield, prior to taking up the post of Head Warder at Holyrood Palace. Onetime President of the Edinburgh Branch of the Black Watch Association, he died near Darlington in April 1913 and was buried at Alnwick, Northumberland.
