James Norris was born in Northampton and enlisted in the Royal Artillery at Sunderland in January 1885, aged 20 years. Posted as a Gunner to 2/1 Brigade, Scottish Division, he was embarked for India in January 1886, where he joined No. 1 Battery, 1st Brigade, a mountain artillery unit in Eastern Division, R.A. As verified by his service record, he subsequently remained on active service in India and Burma until January 1893, in which period he qualified for the above described Medal & 4 clasps. Having then been placed on the Reserve, he was recalled in the Boer War and served in South Africa in 5th Battery, R.F.A. from January 1900 until January 1902 (Queen’s Medal & 3 clasps). Norris was discharged on his return to the U.K.; sold with copied service record.
