George Langworthy was born in Bishops Teignton, Devon, on 14 February 1885. A Domestic Gardener by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 12 March 1901, being advanced to Boy 1st Class in January 1902. Serving on Royal Oak, February 1903-May 1904, he was promoted to Ordinary Seaman in February 1903 and to Able Seaman in March 1904. At the start of the war he was serving on the armoured cruiser Cumberland, October 1913-January 1915 and saw service off the coast of German-held Cameroon, aiding in the capture of the territory. On 1 October 1914 the ship captured the German gunboat Soden with nine merchant vessels off the Cameroon River. He then served on the armoured cruiser Duke of Edinburgh, June 1915-August 1918 and was promoted to Leading Seaman in January 1917. He was present on board the ship at the battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916. Dempster attained the rating of Petty Officer in June 1922 when based at Vivid I. He was discharged ashore on reduction of the Navy in June 1922 and joined the Devonport R.F.R. He was briefly mobilised in 1938. With copied service paper. Serbian medal not confirmed.
