Charles Roberts was born in Cork. A Shoemaker by occupation, he enlisted on 9 April 1891, aged 18 years. He deserted briefly in September 1891. With the Royal Welsh Fusiliers he served in India, December 1893-April 1896; Malta, June 1896-July 1897; Crete, July 1897-August 1898; Egypt, August-September 1898; and Crete, September 1898-January 1899. Transferred to the Army Reserve in January 1899, he was recalled in in October and posted to South Africa, October 1899-May 1900. Roberts was discharged on 15 December 1901 having been found unfit for further service. With copied service papers and roll extract on paper and C.D.
