Guy Bernard Campbell Ward was born on 4 November 1875, the son of Major-General Sir Edward Wolstenholme Ward, K.C.M.G. and Anne Sophia Campbell. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the South Wales Borderers in March 1896 and promoted to Lieutenant in November 1897. Served in the Boer War, 1899-1900, as Assistant District Commissioner, Johannesburg. Served in operations in the Orange Free State, February-May 1900, including actions at Karee Siding, Vet River and Zand River; and operations in the Transvaal, May-June 1900. Severely wounded at Johannesburg, 8 June 1900. Promoted to Captain in March 1907; and Major in September 1915.

In the Great War he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war as Acting Lieutenant-Colonel in the Liverpool Regiment. Served in France/Flanders, 12 August-15 November 1914 and 3 May-11 November 1918. He was on the Staff as Brigade Major, 238 Infantry Brigade, 23 December 1916-15 October 1917. Afterwards in command of 2 Garrison Battalion Liverpool Regiment. Served in Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria etc., 18 December 1916-2 May 1918. Was wounded in action, was several times mentioned in despatches and awarded the brevet of Major, the Distinguished Service Order and French Croix de Guerre. Also entitled to the 1914 Star with clasp trio of medals. With copied research.
