John William Binstead was born in Dunedin, New Zealand on 10 June 1872. In the Second Boer War he served firstly as Trooper 6043 in the Imperial Yeomanry Scouts (name listed as ‘Jurco William Binstead) - a small unit raised in Capetown in March 1900, Binstead having travelled privately to South Africa. Binstead was taken prisoner by DeWet at Roodival, 7 June 1900 but was released a few days later. Having been injured, he returned to Australia. Recovering, he received a commission in the 3rd New South Wales Mounted Rifles and returned to Australia aboard the Antillian in April 1901. Served in operations in Eastern Transvaal and Eastern Orange River Colony. Lieutenant Binstead embarked at Cape Town on 4 May 1902 and arrived in Sydney on 3 June. Employed as a Station Manager in the Wool Industry, his addresses are given as being in Sydney, N.S.W.; then in Durban in 1904 and Germiston, Transvaal in 1909.
