Army L.S. & G.C., E.VII.R. (3540 Sjt. A. J. Duley, 11/Hrs.); with unrelated 1939-45 Star; Africa Star, clasp, 8th Army; Italy Star; France and Germany Star; Defence and War Medals, these six unnamed and mounted court style for display, very fine (7) £70-90

Alfred James Duley was born in Marylebone. A Carman by occupation and a member of the 5th Battalion Rifle Brigade, he attested for General Service in the Cavalry at London on 9 June 1892, aged 20 years, 6 months. Joining the 11th Hussars, he served overseas in India and Egypt. Appointed Lance-Corporal in 1902, Corporal in May 1903, Lance-Sergeant in April 1905 and Sergeant in March 1907. Married in Cairo, 1902. Awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. with gratuity in November 1910. A photograph of the presentation of his medal appeared in the XI Hussar Journal of January 1911. Was in the Quartermaster’s staff for most of his service. Discharged in June 1913, he then went to the Irish Cavalry Depot as (civilian) Mobilisation Storekeeper. Re-attested for the 11th Hussars in November 1915 and served at home until June 1919. After the war he was employed as a Postman. Known to have attended reunions until 1952; he died on 24 November 1953.
