Auction Catalogue
King Edward VI School, Birmingham, Robert Dale Medal, 18ct. gold, by A. Wyon, obverse, bust of Robert Dale with Latin inscription around, reverse, Latin inscription on central plaque and ‘Edwardi Sexti In’ above and ‘Birmingham School’ below, the edge inscribed to ‘M. F. Howard’, 45mm., in its (damaged) fitted case of issue, extremely fine £800-1000
In British Historical Medals 1837-1901, Laurence Brown states ‘No example of the Gold Medal has been met with and it can be presumed to be very rare; the copper specimen in the Ashmolean Museum is, perhaps, a trial striking by Wyon.’
The King Edward School Service Record 1939-45 reveals that Howard served as a Major in the Royal Signals and was awarded the M.B.E., in addition to being mentioned in despatches.
