A fine cavalry campaign group of four to Private Horatio Churchill, 14th King's Light Dragoons

Drgns.); ARMY L.S. & G.C., V.R. (1507, 14th Hussars) minor edge knocks to first medal, otherwise nearly extremely fine and scarce thus (4)

Horatio Churchill was born in Honiton, Devon, in 1827, and enlisted for the 14th Light Dragoons at the age of 20 years. He served with the Army of the Punjab in 1848-9, being present at the affair at Ramnaggar and at the battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat; Surrender of the Sikh Army, the occupation of Attock and Peshawar and the expulsion of the Afghans beyond the Khyber Pass. He accompanied his regiment on the Persian Expedition of 1857, and served with the Central India Field Force in 1857-8 under the command of Major General Sir Hugh Rose, K.C.B.; was present at the capture of Rathgur, action of Barodia; capture of Garrdcotta and pursuit of the rebels; forcing of the Muddenpore Pass; battle of Betwa; siege and capture of Jhansi; action of Koorch; battle of Gollowlie; advance and capture of Calpee and pursuit of the rebels; capture of Morar Cantonments; recapture of town and fortress of Gwalior in June, 1858. He received the medal for long service with a gratuity of £5, 17th September 1868, and was finally discharged at his own request after 24 years service, at Cahir on 13th March, 1871. Sold with copy discharge papers which show full medal entitlement and detailed war service.
