A Military Cross group of four awarded to E.G. de T. Permezel, 5th Battalion, Australian Imperial Forces

MILITARY CROSS, G.V.R.; 1914-15 STAR (2/Lieut., 5/Bn. A.I.F.); BRITISH WAR AND VICTORY MEDALS (Captain, A.I.F.) good very fine (4)

Eric George de Trembley Permezel was born in Caulfield, Victoria, 7th May, 1894. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant on 11th November, 1914 and joined the 5th Battalion in Egypt for desert training before sailing to Lemnos to take part in the Gallipoli landings. He was promoted Lieutenant in May, 1915 and Captain in March, 1916 having proceeded to France. He was wounded in the chest by shrapnel on 3rd June, 1916 at Flerbaix, and awarded the Military Cross in 1918. The following citation was extracted from official records: 'During the attack on ST. MARTIN'S WOOD near FOUCOLCOURT on 23rd August, 1918, this Officer led a front line Company on the attack and showed conspicuous bravery and gallant leadership. On reaching the front enemy posts the line was temporarily held up. He worked around the flank and rear of the enemy positions and captured 3 machine guns and 12 prisoners, thus enabling his Company to move forward. Later he moved up and down his line under machine gun fire correcting and maintaining directions and showed an utter disregard for his personal safety.' Sold with further research and photographs of the recipient and his family.
