Cyril Mindon Trower Hogg was born on 25 January 1879, son of Colonel T. W. Hogg. He was educated at Bedford Grammar School and Sandhurst, won the public schools middle-weight boxing championship at Aldershot in 1897, and middle-weight at Sandhurst in 1898. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the South Lancashire Regiment in August 1898, he became Lieutenant in May 1900, and transferred to the 4th Gurkha Rifles, Indian Army, in August 1900. Promoted to Captain in August 1907, and to Major in September 1915. Served in France and Belgium from 25 November 1914 to 12 March 1915 (wounded at Neuve Chapelle), and from 3 March 1916 to 8 July 1917; operations in Egypt from 24 December 1915 to 25 February 1916. On Staff of 3rd Army, May to July 1917, and then ordered to India where he served on the General Staff, Mhow Division. He took part in the operations in Waziristan 1920-21 (mentioned in despatches) and retired in 1923.
