Samuel Henning, a weaver from Ballyroney, County Down, was discharged from the 48th Foot on 8th November, 1814, after 12 years service in the regiment. He had previously served for 2 years in the 35th Foot.The 48th was particularly distinguished at Talavera, and for its services was twice specially mentioned in despatches by Lord Wellington who had personally observed its conduct.
