MM. London Gazette 16th November, 1944 'In recognition of gallant and distinguished services in Burma.' The following information was extracted from official sources:'On 18th August, 1944, during operations to clear the Tiddim road enemy opposition was encountered at M.S.73, where the enemy was entrenched in and behind a small feature overlooking the road. LINk. Karam Ilahi was with the leading platoon operating with a troop of tanks. As the tanks were manoeuvring to engage the enemy position, an enemy gun crew attempted to rush a gun into position to cover the road, and stop the advance of the tanks and infantry. L./Nk. Karam Ilahi cooly awaited his opportunity and then brought his Bren gun into action against the enemy gun position, killing five of the gun crew and causing the others to scatter. They were then able to continue theadvance, and captured the hill. Later when the enemy counter-attacked this hill feature, Karam Ilahi was again conspicuous for his courage and coolness, using his Bren Gun with devastating effect. His action greatly assisted in repulsing the counter-attack.'71 MM's to the 14th Punjab Regiment, 1939-45.
