A fine immediate M.M. awarded for scouting Japanese positions in Burma to Sepoy Kishan Singh, 14th Punjabis

MILITARY MEDAL, G.VI.R. (17820 Sep., Punjab R.) suspension a little slack, otherwise very fine

M.M., London Gazette, 21st June, 1945: 'In recognition of gallant and distinguished services in Burma.' The following information was extracted from official sources: 'At Ywathit on 7th March, 1945, this Sepoy was taking part in a P1 raid on an enemy position. He went forward alone, as leading scout, into the enemy position and succeeded in getting within 15 yards of an enemy sentry who fired on him. Sepoy Khisan Singh shot the sentry. The remainder of the enemy then took up position on a crest overlooking the raiding party and opened fire with L.M.G. and rifle fire. This Sepoy, together with the second scout who had come forward, withdrew to cover, but the other scout was wounded in the leg, lying in a bush underneath the enemy fire. Sepoy Khishan Singh ran back to the Patrol Commander, explained the situation, arranged for covering fire by L.M.G. and grenade disehargers, then, going forward once more under very heavy fire, dragged the wounded scout into safety ... This Sepoy, by choice, always takes upon himself the duty of leading scout in every patrol in which the battalion has taken part since it first went into operations in September, 1943...'

Sepoy Kishan Singh, a Sikh Jat from the village of Jalpi in Mirpur State, was serving with the 4th Battalion of the 14th Punjab Regiment at the time of the above related action, when the Battalion formed part of 7th Indian Division, 4 Corps.

71 M.M.'s to the 14th Punjab Regiment, 1939-45.
