In the 'Skanda' catalogue Stephen Album comments that these remarkable coins are the "only known early numismatic representation of Rama". As told in the Ramayana Rama spent many years in the forests of India in search of his beautiful wife, Sita, who had been abducted by Ravana, the demon king of Ceylon, who he eventually slew with an arrow. He was aided by Hunaman and his monkeys and Album suggests simian features can be detected in one of the four coins offered in the 'Skanda' sale
