William Griffiths was one of 13 men awarded the silver medal, as one of the rescue party at Llwynypia, for great bravery in descending, during the recent strike, the pits owned by the Canfrian Trust, at very great risk to his own life to save over 130 pit ponies and horses, which had been without food, water, or proper attention for several days.

Frederick Hoey was awarded the silver medal for rescuing a dog from the well, which was full of greasy water, of a lift in Liverpool.
