A scarce pair awarded to Major C.G. Walsh, Bengal Army, commanding the Goorkha Force at Lucknow

SUTLEJ 1845-46, reverse Ferozeshuhur 1845 (Lieut., 14th Regt. N.I.); INDIAN MUTINY 1857-58, 1 clasp, Lucknow (Major, Attd. Goorkha Force) no initials shown on this, both medals at some time appear to have been used as menu holders and therefore with slight defects to suspenders and clasp, otherwise very fine and better, the last rare (2)

Charles Gustavus Walsh was born in Dublin in 1810. He was posted as Ensign in 14th Bengal Native Infantry, 4 November, 1828, and was present at the battle of Ferozeshuhur where he was wounded and had his horse killed-promoted Brevet Captain. He was 2nd in command of the Regiment of Ludhiana, August 1846 till December 1847, and was Commandant of the Regiment of Ludhiana from 18 February, 1858, until his retirement on 31 December, 1861. He served in the Mutiny Campaign, 27 February till 9 April 1858, with the Gurkha Force under Jang Bahadur, as Major Commanding Gurkhas at the siege and capture of Lucknow. He served also in the second China War 1860 as Brevet Lieutenant Colonel, commanding Ludhiana Regiment, with the force for the protection of Shanghai against the Taiping rebels. He retired with the honorary rank of Colonel in 1861, and died at Dundrum, Co. Dublin, on 2 November, 1866.
