CRIMEA 1854-55, 3 clasps, Alma, Inkermann, Sebastopol (CopL, 44th Foot) contemporary engraved naming; NEW ZEALAND 1845-66, reverse undated (696 Sergt. Instr. of Musky., 68th Regt.); ARMY L.S. & G.C., V.R. (696 Serjt. Instr. Musky., 68th Foot); TURKISH CRIMEA, British issue, unnamed, together with two Victorian plated presentation goblets, 160mm, both inscribed 'Presented to Sergt, Insr. of Musky. Hugh Simmons by the Sergts. of the 68th D.L. Infy. as a mark of esteem, 6th March 1869', some bruising and contact marks to the first, otherwise very fine or better (6)

Sergeant Hugh Simmons was born in East Greenstead, Sussex, in February 1830; enlisted as Private 44th Foot (1st Bn. Essex Regr.) on 8 March 1848, aged 18 years; Corporal 19 October 1852; arrived in Crimea 10 April 1854, slightly wounded before Sebastopol 20 October 1854 (London Gazette, 7.11.54); Sergeant 15 July 1855; Seregeant, Corps of Instructors of Musketry, 9 September 1856 to 31 August 1860; transferred to 68th Foot as 2nd class Sergeant Instructor of Musketry, 1 September 1860; retired 6 March 1869; total service 21 years and 10 days. Scarce combination, only 67 undated New Zealand Medals awarded to 68th Foot.
