In the past coins of both Northampton styles have been considered as possibly not English. Blackburn and Lyon (“Regional die production in Cnut’s Quatrefoil Issue” ASMH, 1986) offer overwhelming evidence that they are official products and suggest they were struck from dies cut by an illiterate die-cutter
