Nathaniel Story was appointed Cornet, by purchase, in the 8th Light Dragoons in June 1805. He was appointed to a lieutenancy in the 3rd Dragoon Guards on 1 May 1806, having completed his undertaking to provide a levy of 10 new recruits for the regiment, and became Captain on 30 May 1811.
