Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Andrews Bayley, C.M.G., served in Egypt with the 25th Foot; in the Peninsula in 1808, 9, 10, 11, and part of 1812, and was present at the affair of Alberche, and battle of Talavera, as Adjutant of the 31st Foot. He was appointed Deputy Assistant Adjutant General in January 1810, and attached to the 2nd Division under Lord Hill, in which capacity he served during the retreat to the lines of Torres Vedras, and subsequent advance and pursuit of Massena; also at the first siege of Badajoz, the affairs of Campo Mayo and Olivenca, and other minor affairs during the operations in Estramadura, under Marshal Beresford. He was likewise present at Albuhera, and at the action of Arroyo de Molino, for which he received promotion.
The name of Colonel Charles Andrews Bayley is enshrined in the annals of Gozo’s history. He was appointed Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1833 and for many years he was Garrison Commander and Superintendent of Police in Gozo. He died in Malta on the 12th August ,1852, and was buried at Fort Chambray in Gozo.
