South Africa 1834-53 (Lieut. E. I. S. Rae, 91st Regt.) nearly very fine

Edward James Somers Rae served with the 91st Regiment during the Kaffir War of 1847. Marched against the rebel Boers in August 1848 and served throughout the whole of the Kaffir War of 1850-53. During the major part of the last war he was appointed Captain Commanding the Fort Peddie Fingo Corps and was frequently honourably mentioned in General Orders and in the Despatches of Generals Eyre and Mitchell. He was slightly wounded in the face and hand during an engagement in the Fish River Bush and publicly thanked by General Eyre for his conduct on that occasion. Served in Greece during the Army of Occupation as Brigade Major to the British Forces and also performed the onerous duties of Pay Master twice during that period. Served under Sir Hugh Rose in Central India against the mutineers during the rebellion in1858 but seeing little action was not entitled to the medal. Captain Rae fell sick in November 1858 and the following January was granted leave. He retired by the sale of his Commission on the 4th November 1859.
