France, c.1840/1860. France, Hercules striking down the Lion of Nemee, uniface cast Æ medal, by Barye, 72mm. Uneven green and brown-red patina, extremely rare. Slightly rubbed, but good very fine (£250-300)

Louis-Antoine Barye (1795-1875), studied under Bosio, Gros and Fauconnier, The greatest animal sculptor of the 19th century, from 1838 he produced bronzes out of his own foundry. See P.K (Bronzes du XIXe) p.55.
