Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, 2 clasps, Tel-El-Kebir, The Nile 1884-85 (1696 Pte. W. Cowell, 4th Hussars) edge bruising and pitting from star, otherwise nearly very fine and rare

Although 8 men of the regiment were present at Tel-El-Kebir, mostly employed as Signallers, Cowell is not shown on the medal roll as one of them. It is, however, confirmed that he received the 1882 medal and he possibly earned the first clasp with another regiment. Two officers and 43 o/r’s were present in the Nile campaign with the Light Camel Regiment, Cowell being the only man with the 1882 medal. ‘The Abu Klea Roll’, by J. V. Webb, shows Cowell with the 1882 medal and both clasps - unique to the 4th Hussars. Cowell was transferred to ‘A’ Reserve on 17 June, 1887, with the rank of Saddler Corporal.
