Private Ritchie Milne, 27th (City of Winnipeg) Canadian Infantry was killed in action on 9 December, 1915. The following extracts are taken from the regimental history:
‘In the early hours of November 2, 1915, a voice coming from the enemy lines broke the calm in front of “D” Company: “You are from Western Canada, and if you are the 27th tell Colonel Snider, your O.C., that I have cut his hair and shaved him many times.” For a brief moment the war seemed to take on a personal note.
At night Snider would sanction aggressive scouting forays. The Battalion’s scouts and bombers were deployed to “keep the enemy on their toes.” One such patrol on November 20, skirmished with the enemy when Scout Harry Burrillo crept up to the enemy wire lobbing 4 Mills bombs into German trenches and escaped before they could react. On his way back he came across an enemy listening post.
Privates Bonnar and Milne crawled forward under enemy fire to recover the papers and insignia of a dead German. The enemy listening post was silenced that night by these men.
