‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When all the officers and senior NCO’s of his company had become casualties he took charge of the company and assisted in repulsing enemy counter-attacks under heavy rifle and machine-gun fire. Throughout the whole operation he displayed great courage and coolness, which were an inspiration to the men of his company.’
