‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During a hostile attack he fired his Lewis gun with great effect until the enemy were in the same trench with him. He then fought his way out with bombs, saving his gun, which he again brought into action. He did great execution among the enemy, and his courage was beyond praise.’
