Naval General Service 1793-1840, 1 clasp, Navarino (J. Monday, Lieut., R.N.) nearly extremely fine
Vice-Admiral John Monday entered the Navy in 1806 as Clerk on board the Bustler gun-brig. Although present in the Foudroyant at the capture, in April 1806, of the Marengo and Belle Poule, both of Admiral Linois’ squadron, he continued to be borne on the books of the Bustler, chiefly as Midshipman and acting Sub-Lieutenant, until January 1809, during which period he saw much boat-service on the Downs station. As Midshipman he joined the Queen in 1811 and, under Captain Lord Colville, he was landed in 1812 for the purpose of co-operating with the patriots on the north coast of Spain. Monday was Senior Lieutenant of Glasgow at Navarino and, for his conduct in that battle, he was presented with a second promotal commission dated 22 October, 1827. He afterwards obtained a three years’ appointment in the Coast Guard and, from December 1836 until December 1838, he commanded the Stag in South America. He was appointed Captain in December 1838, and retired as Vice-Admiral in 1867.
