Military Cross, G.V.R., reverse inscribed ‘Captain M. J. McDonald, 6th City of London Rifles, For conspicuous gallantry in action, Sept. 15th 1916’; Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901 (8958 Sgt., 2nd Rl. Fus.) top clasp with unofficial rivets and rank corrected; British War and Victory Medals (Major) surname spelt ‘MacDonald’ on these; Territorial Decoration, G.V.R., with incorrect ‘Territorial’ top bar brooch, generally good very fine or better (5) £500-600
M.C. London Gazette 14 November 1916 ‘For conspicuous gallantry in action. He rallied his men when suffering heavy casualties, and though wounded continued with his company until he had reached his objective. He inspired his men by his fine example.’
