Major-General James Pickard was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, Royal Marine Light Infantry, on 11 May 1839, and served on BLENHEIM in the China expedition. He was present at the battle of Chuenpee, attack on the batteries of Anunghoy and North Wantung, the advance on Canton and subsequent storming of the heights there, and at the bombardment of Colongso. Pickard retired as Major-General on 1 August 1870.
