George Claringbold was born in Walmer, Kent on 12 April 1839. He first entered the service as a prime seaman in the rate of Able Seaman on 4 May 1859 aboard H.M.S. PEMBROKE, and was drafted to H.M.S. MIRANDA as a Leading Seaman on 20 October 1860, receiving advancement to Petty Officer 1st Class as a Quarter Master on 18 May 1864. Was on the books of H.M.S. CURACOA for the Waikato Flotilla from 1st November 1863 to 19 January 1864, and fought ashore for the period 29/30 April 1864 at Tauranga when he was severely wounded in a leg on 29 April. "Paid Off" from HARRIER and discharged to shore and from the service "by purchase" on 3 June 1865.
